British Museum to the Met: Travel Through Time At The World’s Best Museums

Have you always wanted to wander through time? Well since the prospect of time travel is still nowhere close to happening in our lifetimes, you have to make do with what you’ve got. Fortunately you can still get a glimpse of the past by visiting one of the many museums around the world. From London's British Museum to the Louvre in Paris - there are a plethora of ways to explore the past. In no particular order, these are just a few of the museums you won't want to miss:

The British Museum – London, England

Here you'll find over 13 million objects representing human history and culture throughout time. Probably one of the most comprehensive collections in the entire world, the artefacts of the British Museumdocument represent human history from the beginning of time to present. The collection contains amazing cultural relics from nearly every civilisation in the world – past and present. Two of the top attractions, the Elgin Marbles and the Rosetta Stone need to be on your must-see list. You could literally spend hours here in astonishment at the collection, but two of the best things about this museum are the spectacular design of the Grand Court and the fact that admission is free!

Musee du Louvre – Paris, France

The grand structure of the Louvre alone is sure to impress - an enormous Renaissance palace juxtaposed by a modern glass pyramid. The exterior is only the beginning of the wonderful world of art which is housed inside this impressive building. With an astonishing 35,000 items on display, you can easily get lost looking at all the interesting things in this museum. Most visitors will want to be make sure to have a look at Leonardo da Vinci's famous Mona Lisa and Alejandro of Antioch's Venus de Milo.

National Museum of Natural History – Washington D.C., USA

One of the Smithsonian Institute’s top museums, it’s sure to amaze visitors of all ages. Children and adults alike will enjoy the great hall of dinosaurs - one of the museum's most popular exhibits. With one of the most impressive collections, here you'll find over 125 million different specimens of plants, animals, minerals, fossils, rocks, meteorites and artefacts from human culture.  Be sure to visit the museum’s outdoor butterfly garden, which has four different habitats and is open all year round (though the summer months are the best). You could spend days exploring the great halls here, but you'll be disappointed if you leave without catching a glimpse at the impressive Hope Diamond.

The Museum of Egyptian Antiquities – Cairo, Egypt

This impressive museum, also known at the Egyptian Museum, is home to the world’s most extensive collection of Egyptian antiquities. There’s an average of 120,000 items on display, with many more in store rooms. The Royal Mummy Room, one of the museum’s most treasured attractions, has nine mummies on display including that of the famous Queen Hatshepsut. Also be sure to check out the 1,200 objects from the tomb of King Tut, including the legendary solid gold death mask.

The Metropolitan Museum of Arts – New York City, USA

If you like art, you'll this remarkable museum in the Big Apple. The extensive collection spans several continents and periods of artistic movements. You may even call it an art lover's paradise as this collection includes pieces ranging from ancient Egypt through to modern day America, and of course many more. With painting from Caravaggio to Constable and Monet to Matisse, you're sure to find something that catches your eye and inspires you.
